Our History

From the Pre-Med Mafia to a National Movement

The Coast-to-Coast Pre-Medical Society was forged during the global pandemic. Originally known as PNW Pre-Med—and nicknamed the Pre-Med Mafia by its earliest members—the society began as a grassroots COVID and Race Reading Group. In a time of isolation, we gathered to look past the standard checklist of prerequisites and engage in a critical examination of the structural barriers to professional success. We identified the social capital crisis and the bifurcated pipeline as significant obstacles to community flourishing. Our history is rooted in the act of Bricolage: synthesizing the grit of the pandemic experience with high-level academic strategy to create a redemptive path for future healers.

A Continental Expansion: From New England to the Gulf

What began as a regional collective has evolved into a nationwide ecosystem of leadership. Our mission has expanded across the map, establishing a strong presence from the intellectual hubs of New England down to the medical landscapes of Florida. By activating social capital from coast to coast, we bridge the gap between elite institutional networks and the communities they serve.

Philly: Medical Pragmatism and Harm Reduction

In our expansion, Philadelphia has become a vital site of learning for our scholars. As an epicenter of the opioid crisis, the city offers a profound lesson in medical pragmatism. We look to Philly not just to study the crisis, but to understand Harm Reduction as a humanistic art and medical practice.  This approach aligns with our pillar of Akọ na Uche (Sustained Improvisation)—the skill of creative resourcefulness and strategic adaptation needed to meet people where they are. By engaging with the reality of the streets, our members learn that healing often requires practical empathy over rigid protocols.
